The Goal: Family Sustaining Wages
The Philadelphia Officer and Workers Rising (POWR) campaign is a joint
project of Jobs with Justice and the Philadelphia Security Officer Union.
The POWR campaign aims to reform the private security industry in the
Philadelphia area.
Jobs with Justice is a coalition of labor unions, community
groups and religious and student constituency organizations. We are dedicated
to building a movement for workers’ rights and social and economic
justice on the principles of solidarity, reciprocity and action.
The Philadelphia Security Officer Union (PSOU) is a membership-based organization that advocates for collective solutions to work place issues for security officers. Security officers are a growing part of the Philadelphia economy. Unfortunately, work place issues that would normally be addressed by a labor union are complicated by Section 9 b 3 of the National Labor Relations Act, which prevents security guards from joining a normal union and by sub-contracting, which dispersers guards over a broad geographical area. The PSOU is a collective voice for guards in our city and at specific worker places. Hundreds of security officers from 6 different companies from across the city are members. Workplace committees are seeking collective solutions to improve the lives of guards and the safety of our clients.
